MEGA goes to Gambier Island

gambier

This is the second annual trip to Gambier Island! Our department head, Dr. Green, owns a cottage on the island, and he has generously agreed to let us use it for a weekend this summer. This trip was rated as the best event held last year by students in our year end survey. Highlights from last year include observing bioluminescence while swimming off a dock, and a morning yoga session on the deck of the cottage.

While the goal of the trip is to have fun, this is not a guided tour or a vacation to a resort. You will be expected to work with the group and pitch in with cooking and cleaning duties. We’re also looking for volunteers to help with meal planning and buying groceries.

When: evening of Friday, July 26th – afternoon of Sunday, July 28th

Cost: $60

The cost includes:

  • Ferry transport
  • Food
  • Lodging
  • Good company 🙂

What to bring:

  • A sleeping bag
  • A plate, bowl, cup, fork, spoon and knife
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Hiking shoes
  • Bug spray
  • Sunblock
  • Games/activity/book/music

Etiquette:

  • As a thank you to Dr. Green, we will be moving some firewood from the roadside to his woodshed.
  • Everyone should use the outhouse. Outhouse etiquette is to throw peat moss (containers inside and outside the outhouse) after you have done your business. Additional outhouse etiquette is that men typically urinate on any tree on the property that affords privacy.
  • Please wash whatever bed linen you use.
  • Garbage and recycling has to be carried back off island. Organics can be composted by either throwing them off the deck onto the salal below, or by placing them in the compost bin, which is located 10 metres south of the pump house (look for the black box).
  • In general, keep the place clean and tidy (the same way we found it). Cleaning supplies are in pantry.
